Therapeutic Ultrasound
At Biped Podiatry, we are dedicated to using advanced, evidence-based technology to accelerate your recovery from soft tissue injuries. One of the highly effective modalities we use is Therapeutic Ultrasound, a treatment designed to reduce pain and stimulate your body's natural healing processes at a cellular level.
It's important to distinguish this from diagnostic ultrasound, which is used to create images. Therapeutic Ultrasound uses sound waves to deliver a focused deep-heating effect and other non-thermal benefits directly to injured tissues.
How Does Therapeutic Ultrasound Work?
The treatment involves using a small, handheld transducer which is moved over the surface of the skin on the injured area. This device transmits high-frequency ultrasonic waves through the skin into the underlying tissues. These sound waves cause microscopic vibrations, generating two key therapeutic effects:
-
Thermal Effect (Deep Heating): The vibrations create a gentle, deep heat within the tissues. This increases blood flow to the area, bringing essential oxygen and nutrients while carrying away waste products. This enhanced circulation helps to reduce chronic inflammation and relax tight muscles and tendons.
-
Non-Thermal Effects (Cavitation & Acoustic Streaming): At a cellular level, the sound waves create tiny gas bubbles in the tissues that rapidly expand and contract (stable cavitation). This process, along with the physical force of the sound waves (acoustic streaming), is believed to increase cell membrane permeability. This helps to speed up cellular repair, reduce swelling, and accelerate the overall healing cascade.
In essence, therapeutic ultrasound gives your body's natural healing mechanisms a significant boost, helping you recover more quickly.
What Foot & Ankle Conditions Do We Treat With It?
Therapeutic Ultrasound is a safe and painless treatment that is particularly effective for a range of ligament, tendon, and soft tissue injuries, including:
-
Plantar Fasciitis: Reducing inflammation and promoting healing in the plantar fascia.
-
Achilles Tendinopathy: Assisting in the repair of the Achilles tendon.
-
Ligament Sprains: Accelerating the healing of ankle or midfoot ligament injuries.
-
Tendonitis: Treating inflammation in various foot and ankle tendons.
-
Morton's Neuroma: Helping to reduce nerve inflammation and associated pain.
-
Bursitis: Decreasing inflammation in the fluid-filled sacs around your joints.
-
Scar Tissue Adhesion: Helping to break down restrictive scar tissue after surgery or injury.
Your Treatment Session: What to Expect
A therapeutic ultrasound session is a straightforward and comfortable experience. Your podiatrist will apply a special gel to the treatment area (to ensure the sound waves transmit effectively) and will then move the transducer head in small, slow circles over the injury site. You may feel a mild, warming sensation, but the treatment is completely painless. Each session is typically brief, lasting between 5 and 10 minutes.
For optimal results, a course of treatment is usually required as the effects are cumulative.
Pricing for Therapeutic Ultrasound
We offer a clear and fair pricing structure that encourages commitment to a full treatment course for the best clinical outcomes.
-
Single Session: Ideal for a 'top-up' or as an adjunct to another appointment.
-
Price: £50
-

Recommended Block of 4 Sessions: A course of four treatments is often the minimum required to achieve a significant therapeutic effect for most conditions.
-
Price: £180
-
(This provides a saving of £20 compared to four single sessions)
-
-
Advanced Block of 6 Sessions: For more chronic or stubborn injuries, a longer course is often necessary to ensure a complete and lasting recovery.
-
Price: £255
-
(This provides a saving of £45, effectively making your sixth session half-price)
-
If you are suffering from a persistent soft tissue injury, therapeutic ultrasound may be the key to accelerating your recovery.
