What it is

Biomechanics is the study of how the body moves. Problems with how your feet and legs work can put extra strain on muscles, tendons and joints, which may contribute to pain in the feet, ankles, knees, hips or lower back. A biomechanical assessment looks at your posture, joint movement, muscle strength and foot function. Gait analysis adds a closer look at how you walk or run.

What to expect

We'll ask about your symptoms, activity levels and footwear, then carry out a series of hands-on tests of your joints and muscles. With gait analysis, we'll also watch and record you walking or running. Wear or bring shorts and your usual shoes, including trainers if you run. Afterwards, we'll explain what we found and suggest a plan. That might include exercises, footwear advice, orthotics or other treatment.
