Nail surgery

A minor procedure under local anaesthetic for painful ingrowing or curved toenails that keep coming back.

What it is

Nail surgery removes the problem part of the nail, or occasionally the whole nail, under local anaesthetic. We offer two methods: phenolisation, where a chemical (phenol) is applied to the nail root to stop that section regrowing, and incisional nail surgery, where the nail root is removed surgically. Andy has completed CPD training in incisional nail surgery. Neither method can be guaranteed to stop regrowth in every case, and we'll explain the options and risks for you.

What to expect

First you'll have a 30-minute assessment, where we take your medical history and examine the toe. Surgery is usually booked for a later date. If the toe is infected, you may need antibiotics first. We may write to your GP with brief details. On the day, the toe is numbed with a local anaesthetic, the procedure is carried out, and a dressing is applied. Plan to rest your foot for the rest of the day, and bring open or roomy footwear. We'll see you for dressing checks and give you written aftercare advice.

Price

From £400, depending on the procedure. We'll confirm your price at assessment. Prices from April 2025.
