Assessment and care for thick, discoloured or crumbly toenails.

What it is

Fungal nail infection (onychomycosis) can make toenails thick, yellow or brown, brittle and hard to cut. Other things, such as injury or psoriasis, can look similar, so it's worth having the nail checked properly before starting treatment.

What to expect

We'll look at your nails, ask about your health and how long the problem has been there, and explain the likely cause. Thickened nails can be filed down and reduced, which may make them more comfortable and easier to manage. We'll advise you on treatment options, including topical treatments and when to speak to your GP or pharmacist. Fungal nails can be slow to improve and may come back, so we'll be honest about what to expect. If the nail is badly damaged, we can talk to you about cosmetic nail reconstruction once the infection is being treated.
