Ingrown toenails

Help for sore, red or curved toenails that dig into the skin, from simple care to nail surgery.

What it is

An ingrowing toenail (onychocryptosis) happens when the edge of the nail pierces the skin at the side of the toe. That can make the toe painful, red and swollen, and sometimes infected. An involuted nail curves inwards and presses into the nail groove without breaking the skin. Common causes include cutting nails too short or down the sides, tight footwear, injury, and the natural shape of your nails.

What to expect

We'll examine the toe and talk through your options. Many nails can be eased by carefully trimming and removing the offending edge during a routine appointment, with advice on cutting and footwear to reduce the chance of it happening again. If the problem keeps coming back, we may suggest nail surgery under local anaesthetic. If there are signs of infection, we'll advise you on whether you need to see your GP or need antibiotics.
