Dermal filler
An injectable treatment that may help add cushioning where the natural fat pad under the foot has thinned.
What it is
The ball of the foot and the heel have fatty pads that cushion the bones and joints when you stand and walk. With age, repeated pressure, high-impact activity or some medical conditions, these pads can thin (fat pad atrophy). This may lead to pain under the ball of the foot (metatarsalgia), a feeling of walking on stones, and hard skin or corns over the bones.
Dermal filler treatment involves injecting a thick hyaluronic acid gel under the skin in these areas. Hyaluronic acid is a substance found naturally in the body. The aim is to add volume, which may help spread pressure more evenly and ease discomfort. Results vary from person to person, the effect is temporary, and the treatment isn't suitable for everyone. Andy has completed CPD training in dermal fillers (July 2024).
What to expect
You'll start with a consultation and assessment, where we take your medical history, examine your feet and check whether the treatment is suitable for you. We'll explain the possible benefits, risks and alternatives before you decide. If you go ahead, the area is numbed with a local anaesthetic and the filler is injected using a sterile technique.
Afterwards we recommend reduced activity for 24 to 48 hours, give you written aftercare advice and book a review appointment about two weeks later. The filler is gradually absorbed by the body, so any effect usually lasts several months and you may need further treatment. Treatment takes place at our Guisborough clinic.
