Nail surgery

Assessment and treatment options for verrucae (plantar warts) on the feet.

What it is

Verrucae are warts on the foot caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV). They can appear on their own or in clusters (mosaic verrucae), often have small black dots, and can feel like a stone underfoot. They are easily mistaken for corns. Many verrucae cause no pain and go away on their own over months or years, so treatment isn't always needed.

What to expect

We'll confirm whether it's a verruca, a corn or something else, and talk through whether treatment is worth it for you. If it is painful, large or long-standing, the options include reducing the overlying hard skin, chemical treatments, cryotherapy (freezing), and Laser therapy. Results vary from person to person, and several appointments may be needed. We'll also give you advice on preventing spread at home and in places like swimming pools.
